Planning a Half-Turn Staircase

Key dimensions to check when designing a 180-degree half-turn staircase with two flights.

Balance the Two Flights

Half-turn stairs split the climb into lower and upper flights. Keeping the flights balanced usually improves comfort and makes the landing feel intentional.

If one flight is much shorter, check that the pitch and going still make sense on both sides.

Size the Landing

The landing is both a turning platform and a safety feature. It should be wide enough for the stair and clear enough for comfortable movement.

In tight plans, the landing often determines whether the half-turn layout is realistic.

Think About Arrival Direction

A half-turn stair changes how people arrive upstairs and downstairs. Check doors, corridors, and furniture paths before committing to the turn direction.

A technically valid stair can still be annoying if it sends people into the wrong circulation path.
